Women using hoes to do fieldwork, 1943
From 1940 to 1945 Switzerland had a policy to raise the country’s level of self-sufficiency to avoid food shortage in case of an embargo by the Axis powers. In that time swiss authorities also promoted a kind of “spiritual defence” to strengthen values and customs perceived to be “Swiss”. Pictures like this one fit nicely into both.
