Slavery is old too but seldom justified by its longevity. The feminist historian Gerda Lerner writes most usefully about the way in which brothel prostitution in the ancient Middle East originated in the enslavement of captives in warfare, as a way of tidily dealing with surplus women slaves (Lerner,1987).”

- Sheila Jeffreys, the Industrial Vagina: The Political Economy of the Global Sex Trade, Introduction, p. 11 (via femalestruggle)

holdthisphoto:

Femininity is a gender construct – it’s a collection of characteristics and traits that our society attaches certain stigmas too, specifically gendered stigmas that associates said attributes with being inherently for one sex. Hating the fact that patriarchy has always affiliated the least valued gendered characteristics with the least valued sex doesn’t mean that I hate actual females. By saying that hating femininity (a gender construct, a state of gender performativity) is the same as hating females (actual individuals, people of a particular sex) is to continue the patriarchal arrangement that those two things are synonymous with each other and interchangeable. That feminine equals female and female equals feminine.”

-
